Immerse yourself in nature - The Future is Chlorine-Free
For over 30 years Biotop in Vienna has been involved in developing environmentally sustainable products. Protection of the environment and of natural resources is a major concern to us and the core of our corporate culture.
We select all materials carefully and use recycled products wherever possible. We favor Austrian suppliers and manufacture in our own workshop. Our office building has “passive house” status. In a code of conduct partners and employees are encouraged to take a responsible approach to nature.
We are working on a chlorine free future and at the same time efficient and sustainable forms of energy, such as solar energy for heating the swimming pool and running the pump. By offering these we want to make an important contribution to the society's environmental awareness and increase it considerably.
Chlorine is an Environmental Toxin
The development of Europe’s first natural pool by company founder Peter Petrich represented the first true alternative to the traditional chlorinated pool. Chlorine is an environmental toxin, the renowned environmental physician and associate professor Dr. Hans-Peter Hutter, confirms. It not only damages nature, but also can also impact human health. Special chlorine compounds, so-called trihalomethanes, can even be carcinogenic. Biotop Natural Pools and Living Pools are operated entirely without chemicals.
Alternatives to Chlorine and What Really Lies Behind Them:
Many pool manufacturers still believe that chlorine and other chemicals or processes are the only way to keep a pool hygienically clean. The worldwide success of natural or organic pools refutes this view. The fundamental difference between Biotop technology with the biological and PhosTec filter and the other systems is that in other processes all life in the water is killed. Here is some information on the various methods offered in the pool industry as an alternative to the chlorinated pool:
- Water treatment with copper, silver or ozone. Copper is a heavy metal and toxic enzyme and silver has a strong antiseptic effect. In the Biotop concept only non-toxic biological processes are utilized.
- The so-called salt systems are in fact also chlorinated systems. The only difference is that the chlorine is not directly poured into the pool, but is produced in the technology shaft through the electrolysis of salt dissolved in water. This deceives the consumer, as the name suggests a harmless technique.
- In UV irradiation all life in the water is killed off. You practically swim in dead matter.
Save Water and Protect the Environment
Conventional swimming pools that are regularly chlorinated must be partially or completely emptied in the autumn and are not refilled until early summer. This leaves an unsightly empty pit without any purpose, usually an unattractive sight, filled with leaves and dirt.
Per pool one must expect an average of 50,000 liters of water. Year after year this amount of water is wasted on the filling of pools. It is a waste of the precious resource water and a fact that further speaks for natural pools and bio-pools. The Living Pool is only filled once and, via the bio and PhosTec Ultra filters that are custom designed by BIOTOP, is permanently cleaned and operated completely without chemicals.
Swimming in Natural Water Provides Health and Enjoyment
Studies have shown that too much hygiene is also not always healthy: children living in cities are much more likely to suffer from eczema than those growing up on a farm. This could be related to the fact that children in cities grow up “too clean” and don’t have enough exposure to certain bacteria. Researchers confirm this hypothesis time and again and point out that a sterile environment and the high hygiene standards in industrialized countries are possibly to blame for the rise in allergies. Swimming in fresh natural water can prevent this and is one way of combining pleasure and health in a very pleasant way.
